Position Title: Design Engineer – Protection & Controls
Location Information
Onsite – Kansas City, MO or Topeka, KS (TBD)
Position Responsibilities:
Under the guidance of management, the Design Engineer – Protection & Controls contributes to the engineering design of electric substation, transmission line, and generation equipment control and fault protection systems. The position will become familiar with relevant engineering documents and collaborate closely with other System Protection Engineers to develop Protection & Control (P&C) designs for assigned projects.
Key responsibilities include:
- Perform engineering design related to electric substation, transmission line, and generation equipment control systems and fault protection systems to ensure system reliability and safety.
- Specify substation equipment (e.g., bus, ground mat, conduit, switches, power circuit breakers, transformers, relay panels, instrumentation, capacitor and reactor banks) according to technical and safety standards.
- Design protective relay systems, metering, and SCADA systems using standards, previous projects, new research, regulations, and system requirements to ensure reliability and safety compliance.
- Gather and analyze system ratings (voltage, power, ampacity, system impedance, CT ratios, relay settings) to provide required data for reporting to regulatory agencies and ensure system requirements are met.
- Produce detailed system protection and control project scopes and cost estimates to assist in project and budget planning.
- Support operations and construction personnel by troubleshooting, conducting failure analysis, assisting with mis-operations, testing, and commissioning of protective systems.
- Prepare and study technical drawings and specifications to confirm installation and operation conform to company and regulatory codes and standards.
- Direct designers and technicians, reviewing their work and monitoring progress to ensure compliance with regulatory, safety, and project requirements.
- Review and redline substation protection and transmission line protection/control drawings related to standard designs.
- Review detailed system protection and control project bills of material.
Essential Skills, Experience
The ideal candidate will possess the following skills and attributes:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program (required).
- Strong grasp of fundamental engineering principles, advanced mathematics, and power system theory.
- Demonstrated knowledge of generation, transmission, and distribution system relays and associated protection schemes.
- Ability to interpret schematic, wiring, and logic diagrams, and learn new systems efficiently.
- Experience developing elementary diagrams, relay logic, and relay settings for protection system design.
- Highly dependable, self-motivated, and detail-oriented with excellent organizational and proofreading skills.
- Proven ability to work on multiple priorities and manage tasks efficiently in high-stress environments.
- Effective communicator who collaborates well with engineering, operations, and construction teams.
- Proficient in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, databases), with the ability to quickly pick up new software tools as required.
- Ability to learn and apply specific philosophies related to protection and control design.
- Experience with the review of bills of materials and detailed project documentation for substation protection and control projects is highly valued.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution is required.
- Utility (power company or consulting) experience with electric substation, transmission, or generation equipment control and protection systems is preferred.
