Position Title: Senior Cisco Network Engineer
Location Information Onsite – Kansas City, MO
Position Responsibilities:
As a Senior Cisco Network Engineer, your primary responsibility will be engineering, supporting, and enhancing enterprise Cisco wireless (Wi-Fi) networks, with an additional focus on Cisco routing and switching. The role is weighted toward wireless (approximately 75%), with the remaining 25% covering core routing and switching. You will be expected to deliver hands-on technical support, actively contribute to wireless design and troubleshooting, and provide senior-level insight and mentoring for other members of the network engineering team.
Specific responsibilities include:
- Cisco Wireless / Wi-Fi (Wi-Fi is 75% of the workload):
- Design and provide ongoing support for enterprise Cisco wireless networks for diverse locations including clinics and administrative spaces.
- Develop wireless designs for new and expanding sites, using Ekahau predictive modeling software to plan access point placement and density.
- Troubleshoot wireless coverage, interference, connectivity, and performance issues across various environments, including high-density requirements.
- Perform or assist with on-site wireless surveys when needed, interpret wireless readings, and identify/address issues or potential optimizations.
- Refine and improve wireless designs as projects evolve and new deployments are initiated.
- Document and communicate design recommendations, best practices, and procedures; mentor other engineers in wireless technologies and troubleshooting techniques.
- Cisco Routing & Switching (25% of the workload):
- Offer hands-on support, troubleshooting, and guidance for enterprise Cisco routing and switching infrastructure, including support for network upgrades and migration projects.
- Deliver technical expertise for Cisco Catalyst 9300 switches and border gateway routers.
- Review planned network modifications or upgrades and provide feedback or recommendations to optimize functionality, security, and reliability.
- Troubleshoot complex routing, switching, and underlying connectivity issues, addressing both immediate and systemic network challenges.
- Serve as a senior escalation point for network troubleshooting; provide technical leadership for less-experienced engineers.
Essential Skills, Experience
- Extensive hands-on experience in a senior Cisco network engineering position within an enterprise environment
- Deep expertise with Cisco enterprise networking solutions, including both wireless (Wi-Fi) and routing/switching infrastructure
- Broad hands-on background designing, implementing, and troubleshooting large-scale Cisco wireless environments
- Strong skills with wireless site surveys, troubleshooting wireless coverage/interference issues, and analyzing wireless network performance
- Direct experience using Ekahau software for wireless predictive modeling, design, and post-deployment analysis
- Comprehensive knowledge of Cisco Catalyst 9300 switches, Cisco border gateway routers, wireless LAN controllers, and Cisco Prime
- Ability to provide advanced troubleshooting for complex routing, switching, and connectivity challenges
- Strong ability to communicate design rationales, network support strategies, and troubleshooting steps to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Demonstrated leadership and mentoring skills; ability to guide and support junior and mid-level engineers
- Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced enterprise IT environment
Qualifications:
- Significant, recent hands-on experience as a Senior Cisco Network Engineer or similar senior networking role
- Advanced Cisco wireless and routing/switching experience, ideally in a large/multi-site enterprise context
- Hands-on proficiency with Cisco Catalyst 9300 switches, Cisco wireless access points (including the 9166 series), and wireless LAN controllers
- Direct experience and proficiency with Ekahau wireless predictive modeling and design tools
- Relevant certifications are highly desired: CCNP strongly preferred, CCIE highly preferred. Current, substantial, hands-on Cisco experience may be considered in lieu of certifications
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills
