Position Title: Staff Accountant – Hospital Cost Reporting

Position Responsibilities:


The Staff Accountant – Hospital Cost Reporting supports the review and analysis of financial and statistical information for hospitals and other health care providers, focusing on cost reports and reimbursement calculations. Working in a fully remote setting, you will:

  • Review hospital and Medicaid provider cost reports, reconciling them with supporting financial statements and general ledger data.
  • Analyze provider financial and statistical information relating to cost reports and reimbursement.
  • Perform reimbursement calculations and related cost report analyses, ensuring compliance with applicable regulations.
  • Prepare concise documentation and written support for professional conclusions and reimbursement decisions.
  • Conduct desk reviews and, as needed, audits of hospital and health care provider cost reports in line with relevant policies.
  • Perform research to determine compliance with Medicare, Medicaid, or other government billing, cost reporting, and reimbursement regulations.
  • Carry out phases of audit and review work, such as planning, research, risk assessment, fieldwork, and reporting findings.
  • Review and interpret federal and state policies associated with hospital cost reporting and Medicaid reimbursement prior to performing assigned tasks.
  • Prepare, maintain, and update working papers in accordance with regulatory requirements, including Medicaid or government program guidelines and applicable standards (such as AICPA).
  • Analyze cost allocation methods, provider reimbursement, and financial data as appropriate to each project or engagement.
  • Uphold excellence in communication, data gathering, analysis, reporting, and process improvement, in a collaborative and remote work environment.
  • Maintain the security and confidentiality of protected health information during analysis and documentation processes.
  • Maintain thorough and organized electronic documentation and supporting workpapers.
  • Collaborate with project teams, reviewers, and stakeholders to achieve engagement objectives efficiently and effectively in a remote setting.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as assigned.

 

Essential Skills, Experience


  • Demonstrated professional experience with hospital cost reporting, health care provider reimbursement, or closely related health care financial analysis.
  • Knowledge of hospital reimbursement concepts, including cost allocation, cost-to-charge ratios, cost settlement, and government program billing procedures.
  • Experience reviewing, preparing, auditing, or analyzing hospital cost reports and supporting documents.
  • Familiarity with relevant reporting systems (such as Medicare CMS-2552 or state Medicaid methodologies) and applicable regulations.
  • Ability to interpret and apply federal and state hospital cost reporting and reimbursement policies.
  • Strong analytical, data analysis, and problem-solving skills.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication capabilities, particularly in analytical reporting.
  • Excellent organizational skills with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Ability to multitask, plan, and prioritize assignments in a fast-paced and deadline-driven environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Microsoft Excel and its analytical functions.
  • Strong skills in maintaining documentation, electronic workpapers, and audit trails.
  • Ability to work independently and efficiently in a fully remote setting.
  • Ability to collaborate with stakeholders, auditors, and project teams in a distributed, remote work environment.
  • Willingness to travel as required by client or project needs.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or a related field required.
  • Direct professional experience in hospital cost reporting, provider reimbursement, government health care program analysis, or equivalent.
  • Master’s degree in accounting or related field preferred.
  • CPA license or candidacy preferred.
  • Experience with hospital reimbursement data analysis, health care auditing, or related financial review activities a plus.
