Position Title: Sr. IBM i Series IT Administrator
Location Information WI/PA/FL
Position Responsibilities:
The Senior IBM i Series IT Administrator will provide end-to-end administration and operational support for enterprise IBM i (AS/400) environments. This position is focused on ensuring platform stability, security, performance, and availability, partnering with cross-functional teams to deliver robust infrastructure services. The role is offered as a one-year contract with the opportunity to become a full-time position based on business needs and individual performance.
Key responsibilities include:
- Install, configure, and maintain IBM i operating environments (across physical and virtual LPAR platforms).
- Apply Program Temporary Fixes, cumulative fix packs, and technology refreshes in accordance with formal change management processes.
- Administer logical partitions, system settings, subsystems, memory pools, and configure workloads for optimal performance.
- Monitor system health using Collection Services and Performance Tools, overseeing disk utilization, auxiliary storage, and resource thresholds.
- Maintain thorough system documentation, operating procedures, and configuration baselines to ensure audit readiness and operational consistency.
- Manage all aspects of IBM i security including user and group profiles, object and adopted authority, and special authority configurations.
- Configure and operate system auditing, security exit programs, and compliance reporting in alignment with organizational and regulatory requirements.
- Design and administer effective BRMS backup strategies, including full, incremental, and journal-based backup schemes.
- Support high availability (HA) and disaster recovery (DR) solutions, conduct regular recovery testing, and ensure readiness for failover events.
- Administer DB2 for IBM i databases including schema management, SQL optimization, performance tuning, and journal management.
- Manage IBM i network services such as TCP/IP configuration, DNS, FTP, and secure file transfer protocols.
- Implement and maintain job scheduling and automation using enterprise schedulers and custom CL based scripts.
- Partner with developers working in RPG, COBOL, SQL, and Java to support varied application workloads on the IBM i platform.
- Act as a senior technical advisor for infrastructure initiatives, environment assessments, and platform migrations.
- Mentor junior administrators and promote ongoing knowledge sharing within the IBM i team.
Essential Skills, Experience
- Eight or more years of hands-on IBM i system administration experience in enterprise environments.
- Expertise administering IBM i operating system versions 7.3, 7.4, and 7.5.
- Advanced knowledge of IBM i backup and recovery solutions, particularly BRMS.
- Deep experience with DB2 for IBM i—schema management, performance tuning, DDS/SQL, and journaling.
- Advanced skills in Control Language (CL) programming, job scheduling, and automation.
- Proven experience applying security best practices on IBM i: administering user/group profiles, object authority, auditing, and regulatory compliance.
- Track record with IBM i high availability and disaster recovery solutions such as MIMIX, iTera, or PowerHA.
- Strong experience supporting IBM i networking services, including configuration of TCP/IP, FTP, DNS, and secure file transfer mechanisms.
- Proficiency with monitoring and performance tools including Collection Services and Performance Tools for IBM i.
- Familiarity with IBM Access Client Solutions and IBM i Access services.
- Excellent written and verbal communication abilities—including the creation of technical documentation and delivering presentations to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- IBM Certified Systems Expert for IBM i or similar industry certification.
- Experience with IBM Power Systems hardware, virtual IO server, and hardware management console administration.
- Knowledge of DevOps practices for IBM i environments (RDi, source control, continuous integration).
- Experience in regulated verticals such as healthcare, financial services, and/or public sector.
- Consulting or client-facing experience in managed/professional services capacity.

Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or associate degree in information technology or a related discipline (or equivalent professional experience).
- Minimum eight years' IBM i system administration in a large-scale, enterprise environment.
