Position Responsibilities:


As a Systems Engineer, you will be responsible for performing Windows Server upgrades, lifecycle management for VMware ESXi, and firmware and BIOS updates on Dell and HPE enterprise hardware, all within highly structured change management environments. Your role will focus on executing upgrade projects with precision, ensuring minimal downtime and the highest standards of compliance and documentation.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Windows Server Upgrades:
    • Perform both in-place and migration-based upgrades of Windows Server 2016 to new supported versions
    • Validate application and service compatibility prior to all upgrade activities
    • Conduct comprehensive pre- and post-upgrade testing, including cluster failover validation
    • Troubleshoot operating system issues including drivers, services, networking, and domain membership
  • VMware ESXi Upgrades:
    • Plan and execute ESXi host upgrades using Lifecycle Manager (vLCM) or ISO-based methods
    • Validate hardware compatibility using the VMware Hardware Compatibility List (HCL)
    • Update VMware Tools and virtual machine hardware compatibility levels as required
    • Perform vCenter upgrades and address any interoperability challenges
    • Troubleshoot upgrade failures and driver conflicts impacting ESXi or vCenter functionality
  • Server Firmware and BIOS Updates – Dell and HPE:
    • Perform BIOS, firmware, iDRAC, iLO, and storage controller updates on Dell PowerEdge and HPE ProLiant server hardware
    • Utilize vendor tools including Dell Repository Manager, iDRAC, OpenManage, HPE SPP, iLO, and OneView
    • Validate firmware baselines and ensure systems meet or exceed vendor recommendations
    • Schedule and execute updates to minimize service disruption
  • General Duties:
    • Adhere to established change management and maintenance window procedures
    • Document all upgrade steps, rollback plans, and results of post-change validation activities
    • Maintain accurate records of assets and configuration changes
    • Collaborate broadly with application owners, network support teams, and project managers for cross-functional coordination
    • Provide root cause analysis reports for any upgrade-related incidents
    • Ensure all systems maintain security and compliance standards

 

Essential Skills, Experience


  • 5-7 years of hands-on experience as an enterprise systems administrator or engineer
  • Advanced knowledge of Windows Server versions 2012 R2 through 2022, including upgrade and migration methodologies
  • Proven experience performing VMware ESXi upgrades and managing vCenter environments
  • Strong familiarity with Dell PowerEdge and HPE ProLiant server hardware lifecycle management
  • Thorough understanding of networking fundamentals (e.g., VLANs, NIC teaming, vSwitches)
  • Experience utilizing tools such as Dell Repository Manager, iDRAC, OpenManage, HPE SPP, iLO, and OneView
  • Proficiency in troubleshooting complex systems issues and analyzing underlying root causes post-upgrade
  • Strong documentation skills, with a track record of maintaining accurate configuration and change records
  • Ability to follow structured change management procedures and work effectively within maintenance window constraints
  • Collaboration, communication, and organizational skills necessary to work across functional teams
  • Experience with PowerShell or similar automation scripting is a plus

Qualifications:


  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • Relevant certifications are a plus, including:
    • VMware VCP-DCV
    • Microsoft MCSA or MCSE (Windows Server)
    • Dell EMC or HPE hardware certifications
    • ITIL Foundation
